Can you download college textbooks onto an Amazon Kindle?

    I work at a university and am part of a group investigating ebook readers for students and faculty. What we've found so far is that when it comes to college textbooks, options are limited. Publishers are obsessed with DRM, which makes sense since they charge hundreds of dollars for textbooks. Many of them offer only online textbooks. Others require customized applications. At this point we're planning to recommend the iPad because of this. Another common complaint is that it's easy to use e-readers for linear reading, but not necessarily for the kind of textbook reading used for classes. The Kindle wasn't recommended primarily because it's black and white only - many textbooks have color charts and graphs that don't display properly. If you're an English major and will be reading lots of novels, a Kindle might work out for you. Otherwise, I'd say forget it for school. A low end iPad would be a better investment.

You can get some textbooks on a Kindle but not all of them. Your best bet when shopping for textbooks is looking at all your options -- new books, used books, renting textbooks, e-textbooks, etc. That's why I use http://www.bigwords.com for all my textbook buying needs. They are a textbook search engine that always finds me the best price and they just recently added Kindle and Nook ebook stores to their search results.
