How can I get a career in programming?

Web Career Advice: I'm looking to get into web development and design. What do companies generally look for? What programming/scripting/markup languages would it be good to learn?

  • Answer:

Strong HTML and CSS skills are a must. If you want to do front-end development learn Javascript and some of the popular frameworks based on Javascript, like jQuery. With Javascript you can even do server-side programming nowadays. 5 or 6 years ago everybody would have given Javascript just one more year :) Anyway, it's good to learn Javascript. If you want to focus on back-end development Ruby and the framework Ruby on Rails are very highly evaluated right now and it's like to continue to grow in popularity. I still like PHP, because it's popular, easy to learn and you find a lot of help online. A lot of people say it's flawed and has conceptional problems. What I also liked was Python, because it has an easy syntax. Gotta get back to learning more Python :) Ok, tl;dr. I like to work with web-devs who are familiar with HTML/CSS, are good with Javascript and are aware of it's capabilities, and are very good with a popular back-end language. Depending on your focus, whether it tends towards front- or back-end, your skill-set should shift between those basics.
