Why is sodium only found in compounds in nature?

Sodium a is very active metal.Explain why it is only found in compounds in nature.?

  • i need help please! i have a lab due tomorrow. also another question was: explain why acids are not stored in steel containers

  • Answer:

Sodium is a very active metal. That is why its only found in compounds in nature - it reacts with almost anything it contacts. Acids are not stored in steel containers because the acid can corrode the steel. This weakens the container and contaminates the acid.

the second question is probably because they would eat away at the steel and chemically change it

I am in advanced chemistry so I am very sure about this answer. Sodium is only found in compounds because it reacts with other prodeucts found in nature. It is pretty much impossible to find sodium pure because of its high reactivity.

You just answered your own question. Sodium is active, so if it's by itself, it combines with things. In nature, there's moisture (water), and if there were free sodium, it could combine to become sodium hydroxide. Some acids are stored in stainless steel containers, especially when it's important to have a large container that won't shatter. But in general, an acid will oxidize (rust) iron. I think that's what they're looking for.

I am not sure about sodium only found in compounds but if that is correct it would be due to the fact that sodium is so highly reactive. Acids are not stored in metal because they would react with the metals. The metals would become ions and enter the acids. Over time this may cause a hole to be eaten into the side of the metal container. Also the acid would now contain metal ions and the pure acid would be changed to some other compound.

because Sodium quickly oxidizes in air and steel can rust if you put acid

That's dumb. All elements are only found in nature. Where else would you find them? Heaven? Last time I checked, outer space was part of nature.

Because salt is natual.
