What causes surface tension in liquids ? name a substance that has a very high surface tension what kinds of?
-
intermolecular forces account for the high value?
-
Answer:
Actually Yes, the intermolecular forces - thus the metals has one of the biggest surface tensions - see Hg - it has so big surface tension, that it even makes capillary depression. And if dropped on glass, it will try to make a droplet, not spreading around, because of high forces that keep Hg together (its surface tension is 300 times higher than water, I think :))
