I have type 2 diabetes, what kind of alcohol can i drink?

With diabetes, you would be healthiest if you do not drink alcohol or smoke. I know this is not what you want to hear. I loved chocolate but i haven't had any since November 1996 when i was diagnosed because i can't eat just one tiny piece. I would eat so much that my blood sugar would always be to high. When I was diagnosed with diabetes, the first question my doctor asked was: Do you drink or smoke. I answered that I did not. He said that it improved my chances of a long life by 50% with diabetes. he said that any alcohol affected blood sugar and cigarettes simply irritated the heart, reduced oxygen in the blood. Your system needs to be at maximum efficiency to fend off all the possible symptoms. Ask yourself: Is your drinking so important that you will risk losing a leg? How about a few toes? After 14 years, I am symptom free by using the rules of the game. You have to decide for yourself. Diabetes does its most harm indirectly. The disease weakens the ability of the body to fight a variety of conditions that require healthy blood. If you have high cholesterol, for instance, diabetes doubles the chances that you will have heart problems from it. The question you have to ask is the same one Clint Eastwood asked in Dirty Harry: do you feel lucky today? I make my oiwn luck. I do not play with the one life i have. I am too important to myself to risk dying before i have used up all my abilities.

The drinks with the least amount of extra sugar and calories are: Dry wines (red or white, but nothing even remotely sweet-tasting) and pretty much any clear 80 proof spirit. A spirit should be taken only with a diet mixer...no sugar or juice added. Beer is not a great choice although the low-carb light ones aren't that bad. As far as the alcohol portion goes, that will be comparable with any drink, and is digested pretty much like a sugar...sorta. So moderation is key. If you are going to drink, exercise and control your diet as well.

Alcohol is a complex sugar, so will effect your sugar levels, there are some light beers, Miller, Michelob that are very low in carbohydrates. You may also check out the non-alcoholic beers, I found that the Bush NA beer had the flavor of beer with no after taste, all the others had an after taste that I didn't like. You need to decide now if you want to live a long life, or a short one. I choose long. Eat right, monitor your sugar, be healthy. Your circulation, and your eyesight will be the first to go south on you. Erectile issues will be a major problem, is mister Johnson important to you ?

I think you must talk to your doctor first but if you really must drink then be sure that you have ur insulin in ur pocket . take care

Well, assuming you're not taking insulin, you should keep your drinking occasions to a minimum, and don't consume more than 2 drinks in one sitting/night. Diabetes will substantially increase your risk of pancreatitis due to alcohol, even in small doses. If you are taking insulin, your diabetes is more severe, and you should not consume ANY alcohol.

Technically you are not supposed to drink alcohol. But if you do, you need to take your insulin when you do.
