Is Indian food generally gluten free?

In order for food to be gluten-free, does it have to say on the label "gluten-free"?

  • Or can I rely on that if it doesn't mention gluten on the ingredient list that it is gluten -free?? Is gluten named something else on labels, or is it always called gluten??? ...show more

  • Answer:

As someone else mentioned, some foods like canned fruit and vegetables are naturally gluten free. Things that you need to be careful of are canned soup, sauces, gravies, bread, and breaded products, and fillers. Also fermented things like soy sauce. The Kraft, Hormel, Uni-lever and ConAgra companies will list gluten on their labels. With other companies, they may not. No. You need to check the ingredients label. If it doesn't contain wheat, barley, rye, spelt, and some other closely related grains, or oats (which are usually contaminated in the factory), and no "modified starch" with unspecified source, no soy sauce, malt anything, maltase, .... Must say "gluten free" just because it is not labeled does not mean there is none of this product in the food. It maybe a smaller amount than what the FDA requires to be noted. MSG for instance is in some tuna fish but is not labeled because it is an ingredient in the "broth" that is labeled. Be careful if you are allergic! There are a lot of hidden ingredients in our food!

Not necessarily. For instance canned or frozen vegetables would not have "gluten free" on the labels, but for the most part, they would be gluten free. Items such as cookies, breads, cereals would probably contain gluten and you would have to read the labels to find out. Items such as these you had better rely on the gluten free label and go from there. You have to be careful of items such as oats or oatmeal because they are processed in areas which may contain gluten products. Oatmeal does contain some sort of gluten. I find I can eat oatmeal without any effect, but cannot eat anything which contains wheat or any wheat byproducts. Just be careful and learn to read the labels.
