What are the features of business management?

I am making an all-in-one business management software suite. What things would you want in it that are critical to the functioning of your business?

  • Small businesses struggle everyday to face infrastructural challenges all while battling one's work-life balance and daily problems that, left unsolved, can drive one's business into the ground. I am working on a software product that seeks to better solve these problems and make overall management of a small business or company much easier so that it's manager and employees can thrive and reach unattained levels of productivity and success. However, for me to make this ERP software system to aid these businesses I need their input. That is why I am posting here; so I can get a better understanding of the needs and problems you face that if solved can alleviate much lost time, money, and stress. What do you as the manager and/or employee see as a critical problem or need of the company? I understand the input and value of your time occupying this particular role and would greatly appreciate any answers you can provide to the following questions at the link below. Thanks! http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/KBW8N7K

  • Answer:

The answer I would have given when I ran a small business is that helping bring in new customers and revenue were problems 1-99 on my to do list. Operational issues like accounting, facilities, etc., were not on the radar, plus there are many good software solutions for those already. I would also urge you to be more specific in your questions. I have no idea what a "business management" suite is, and I've been in software for a long time. Pick a specific, focused, area to start with.

At the very least you can study https://www.openerp.com/. Become an expert on that platform and understand its shortcomings. Then build something better if it still makes sense.

I think I understand what you want to achieve and I like the concept but it might not be practical. I see an opportunity to pivot though... I take it that you want to take some of my spinning plates out of the air so that I can spin the more important ones. The problem with this is that for the most part, the spinning plates that aren't important don't require your on going attention since as you organically grow your skills you learn and adapt and address the areas you're talking about - almost set and forget. As an example, if you started with zero experience, operationally you have to worry about company structure, accounting, compliance, legal protection, insurances etc plus timing for each (I.e. not all of these are essential for day one) but I think practically once you get your head around each area you spend very little time worrying about them anymore since your primary focus should always be growth and strategy. Since these concerns are all temporary, I'm not sure there is much on going relevance to a product that manages them but there could be value in a startup tool (read: a checklist but smarter) that helps you to realise and plan for the decisions that will have to be made and the trigger points for when you should start thinking about them. At the moment, in this scenario you have to settle for an experienced advisor :)

I am not an entrepreneur, but as a marketer, I feel it is important to first understand what are the business pain points you think your offerings will address, and what is it that your prospective clients are looking for (customer survey and analyst reports may help here). Also, is it important to analyse what is that the competition is offerings vis-a-vis your solutions, and then come out with a USP so as to gain sustainable competitive advantage.

Hi, I just came across this post while searching, and was very curious how this all turned out for you? Did you ever get a system created and launched? My team recently started using a new software called https://suitedash.com/ that we really like so far. The main selling points for us was being about to handle CRM, billing/invoicing, file sharing, project and task management, and private messaging, without having to have a bunch of different accounts all over the place. With SuiteDash we have one login, and one subscription, and we can do everything we need.Hope things turned out well for you, and maybe check out SuiteDash for some inspiration!
