Is BlackBerry a good investment?

Is buying Blackberry stock a good investment right now?

  • Why or why not?

  • Answer:

Frankly, I am not in favor of any technology stocks. They have to spend too much capital keeping up with the Jones and all of the technology crap is a fad market. Here today gone tomorrow. You are probably too young to remember the CB radio craze. Does anyone still own a CB radio? RIMM is being sandwiched between Apple and Google. They are both dining on RIMM's market.

Someone mentioned(on CNBC) that Business that use Blackberries reluctant to switch are the only reason why RIMM's earnings are holding up, and that's certain to change.

RIMM is not a good stock. I used to trade that junk(in my opinion) during the $60 range when all the defective storms were being sold. And I got two of the defective storms. Plus, the torch on an At&t only plan will not be good for sales numbers. They will be following the path of palm imo, not apple.

No, on Bloomberg they were reporting that it is actually becoming more popular to short-sell that stock. Basically, Blackberry started the trend with smartphones, but now companies such as Goldman Sachs etc are starting to allow people to use iPhones etc for corporate e-mail because these devices are starting to be able to do push e-mail etc just like a Blackberry. Also, certain countries such as India, UAE are banning Blackberrys in the workplace because of its encryption features. So, it would therefore not be a good idea to buy shares in RIM. Demand is set to decrease significantly.

I would argue against buying RIMM because, while it may be attractively priced (PE of 10 isn't bad) it is not a business that I want to own. For many years people who had blackberries would not be willing to switch to another brand, and would demonstrate tremendous brand loyalty. Those days are gone, and so is their economic moat. Android and Apple both have better OS's (it is arguable that Palm does too) and people no longer have any qualms about switching. This is not to say that RIMM will disappear entirely but I don't think they will be able to continue growing like they did in the past without some serious changes. When a growth stock switches to a value stock (ie when it's growth opportunities are presently derailed) the price takes a massive beating and you don't want to be anywhere near it at the time. That is what GRMN did 2 years ago and I suspect RIMM is looking very similar to them. Also, as Buffett says: 'I'd rather get a good business at a mediocre price than a bad business at a good price'

Yes, Buying black berry is right move. We should buy good companies share when the sentiment for them in the market is not that good. but, as soon as the sentiments improve, the stock prices move higher. This investment an be short / long term. In any which ways it will pay you.
