  • Answer:

Yes, it is possible to speak English fluently if you are not a native English speaker. Yes, is it possible to teach English as a non-native English speaker. Many Japanese ESL learners can speak quite fluently after learning English conversation in an eikaiwa (private English conversation school) for a number of years. They spend a lot of time during the week studying conversational English over a number of years. For a Brazilian whose native language is Portuguese I would say you have an easier road ahead of you because your native language uses the same alphabet and has similar sounds. You should be able to speak more fluently and do it much sooner than a Japanese ESL learner. Focus on speaking to a native speaker often (4 hours a week or more) so that you can pick up the nuances like natural pauses, word stress, intonations, and just plain old pronunciations. Watching American movies with a lot of dialog doesn't help as much as speaking to a native English speaker because you need feedback. Here in Japan, the trend is moving towards hiring non-native ESL teachers to teach English and this trend is growing rapidly. So even if you are not a perfect speaker, there is a good chance of getting hired as a teacher here in Japan as long as you're not Japanese. Also for your information the TOEIC test in Japan will be moving towards having international accents in the recordings so that students can hear accents from all over the world. This means that opportunity opens up for you in a big way. I hope this give you some positive insight in how to realize your dreams. Best Regards, Prodigy Creator

I am a Spanish teacher and department chair at a 4000 student High School in California. I am not a native speaker of Spanish. I can tell you that the BEST Spanish teachers that I've worked with were NOT native speakers. I would guess that the same would apply to teachers of English as a foreign language. As a brazileño, you have learned English. This will give you a tremendous advantage over a native speaker of English as you relate English to your native Portuguese. Note that this assumes that you develop a significant fluency in English (practice, practice, practice!) and that you use both audio and visual recordings of native English speakers to give the students the best advantage in terms of pronunciation. Look at it this way: there are a lot of speakers of Portuguese, but not all of them could teach Portuguese! Teaching a language involves relating and interacting with students. I encourage you to take some type of certification test to verify that your competency is sufficient to teach the language. Note that competency relates to one's ability to accurately communicate. Fluency is only one aspect.

no big im viet but english is my thing i encourage you 2 remember your native language however

It's obvious that the minority of english teachers is actually english! Of course you could teach - but there are usually many requirements...It depends on the place you would like to teach in. You should find out, for example, which degree of english is required in particular place - private schools or others. In my country - you have to study english to become a teacher. But of course if you don't, you still can lead private lessons, for example.. Generally, to teach english all over the world, regardless of english spoken countries, you're required to have a CPE from Cambridge... That's quite "hard to get";) But - good luck!

Yes, many Japanese have done it.

Yes you can. i will tell you a story about an Oscar winning actor. He was considered to possess a rich, full voice and distinctive, articulate enunciation in English But it was not his first language. I am refering to Jose Ferrer, born in Puerto Rico. He came to the United States to study in Princeton.

I honestly think that anyone can teach a language that is not their native one. I think that by spending time in the US, it is the best way you can learn English. You are taught to speak about certain situations that you would not learn in school, like how to order a pizza or say that your cat needs a certain type of cat litter. However, if you want to teach English in a classroom setting, you might want to get a degree depending on who or what grade you will teach. But I think that experience in the US and a mix of some schooling and a certificate would be great. Who knows, you may speak better English than some native born US Citizens already!

Yes it is very possible. There are plenty of Cubans where I live (native spanish speakers) that teach ESL classes. If you want to pursue higher education or a certificate, I suggest you get an education degree (ESL maybe) and only maybe take a linguistics class from the English department. I have an English degree and it certainly doesn't teach you to speak or write any better. Sounds like you have a noble goal. Good luck.

I think it's possible and if you speak English as well as you write it, there should be no problem. Why do you think you don't speak English fluently? Is it your accent? So long as the accent doesn't interfere with pronunciation, I don't see it as a problem. If you think it is, there are places to go where you can learn to drop it. I love accents, DH has one.
