Answer:
this is a bit of a taboo solution but i worked in an autism school and they actually used certain dog toys, they are easily sanitized and have the texture and aren't hard. they are safe for teeth and have smooth gummy textures. its also easy to hide the fact its a dog toy from the public as long as it isn't bone shaped; try chew tubes that people sometimes shove treats into. also teething rings have the right gummyness to it.

i would be concerned about a child that age with that level of disability chewing on gum... look on www.pfot.com to see if there is anything else for chewing the chew tubes i used were rubbery, not hard what about a rubber ball (made for a dog so its rugged and can't be bitten apart)..start telling a funny story (even if its made up) about a little puppy you saw chewing on a toy)..maybe she would take the hint i have actual seen some toys that come both in human and dog version...the dog version is the same except more rugged..and the dog toy tends to come with a squeaker that you can cut out..

Are you familiar with our KidCompanions Chewelry? The heart or circle shaped pendants in various colors are stylish and discreet allowing the user to fit in. The pendants have two textures, one rubbery and a raised dot that is harder and smooth. They are worn around the neck on a 100% organic cotton lanyard or clipped to clothing. Parents and occupational therapists recommend them as an age-appropriate chewy fidget that is SAFE and effective. They are bpa, phthalate, pvc, lead and latex free. KidCompanions Chewelry is made with FDA approved materials, sourced in the US and Canada, made in Canada, and CE marked. It is sold at www.kidcompanions.com Thanks, Lorna d'Entremont
I agree with car252. Parent groups are invaluable. It doesn't sound like it matters what you suggest if it must be her idea. Maybe you can check on toxicity of some toys. It would be age appropriate for him to be playing with a Stretch Armstrong type of toy and may have the texture you say he needs to bite. I would first determine the function of the behavior. Is it really that he desires a certain "texture" to bite or chew on? You said his teeth are bothering him. Has he been to a dentist recently? This is the age his teeth should start falling out. You described this as a new or increasing behavior. What brought this on? Any changes? "He bites his mom" sounds like communication more than sensory to me. Good luck!!!

Google "Chewlrey" and you'll find a few options. I know a number of chewers that this has helped - including those who would chew through shirts in a few weeks or other non food items. Looking at food-grade silicone is a good start, I can't tell you how long my daughter chewed on our kitchen spatula or the end of an eye dropper which just seems to be the right texture. I've heard of a number of nurses using a length of surgical tubing to chew on too. That would seem to have about the same texture as skin for chewing.

If mom has issues listening to you, see if it is alright with her to have her speak to other parents that might bring their ideas to her. Parents need to connect with other parents. Parents often feel their not being listened to and cut everyone else out. Have some parents groups meet to help each other.

How is it a bad thing? But you can easily tell if children are artistic.. they enjoy painting, drawing, and music.. I was very artistic as a child.. I love art and the performing arts as well!
