How can i become a special needs teacher?

I am currently an elementary/special education major. I live in Pennsylvania. The PA Board of Education just passed more requirements for elementary education majors. All elementary educators must have special education certification as well. Therefore, I have to certify in both fields. I'm not sure if other states will follow with this, but it may happen down the road. Yes, you do need your state certification and a bachelors degree in special education unless your state is like mine and requires special and elementary together. Some states require you to have a masters degree in education. You might have to find your state's educational standards and requirements, which can be accessed online. Actually, on the personal level, my boyfriend was a special student at our local school. He cannot read or write and has the mentality of a 12 year old, but he is a very sweet person. I have been around many special students in my life. I worked with them at my old job. I have a friend who is mildly autistic, but she is extremely creative. Children with special needs are fascinating to me. You do need to have patience with them and sometimes I've gotta be firm with my boyfriend because he gets a little silly sometimes and is very naive to what others tell him. I've already tried teaching him to read and I've got him reading a couple words already. Sometimes he gets frustrated with the material and with me. I'm sorry to write a novel but I really like my major and everyday I learn something amazing about education and children. I wish you good luck and hope you enjoy your experience!

You need to train as a teacher to teach, But if you want to work with children who have special needs there are loads of ways to go about it. The N.C.H take on out reach workers (who do not need any qualifications) and train them up, when you have worked for them for a few months you can go into the nursery's, schools and respite homes quite easily Good luck x

an excellent way to see if you are indeed cut out for it is to ask about becoming a teaching assistant in a local mainstream school for kids with special needs which can range from children with physical needs to deaf children to children with such as dyslexia,,if you are good and the children seem to gel with you and you can see ways to improve the child's development you will be put forward for the special programs to enable you to train and teach at the same time,,,this is a very hard job but if you are one of the few who adore it,,,they will spend money on you to get you where you need to be,,i wish you luck as a mum of a special needs child,,and he loves his assistant,,they have a great bond.

You need to change to a degree course; then get a PGCE qualification specialising in SEN

no matter how much ed. you have. you have to have lots of patience to teach sp. ed.

Bachelors in Education, then you can get certified by your state to teach in special education. While going for your Bachelors you want to take as many courses in special needs classes as you can to get that specialized training. Good luck!

You have to go to college and get you bachelors in education. Try to take classes in social work.
