What can you do with the Pell Grant?

What if I can't pay for my classes before I receive my Pell Grant?

  • I received a Pell Grant for the coming up semesters. From reading up on the pell grant, I found out that you have to pay for your schooling first and then they will give you the ...show more

  • Answer:

That's not quite how it works. The pell grant will be sent directly to the school. It will be applied to your tuition. Then any EXTRA will be sent to you. So, the grant pays for your classes first and then you get the left over. So, don't worry about paying out of pocket.

Go to the financial Aid Office in your school, they will let you know what you can do. Also, check out your FASFA for student loan offerings, you can get the student loan, student loan will automatically be paid to the school, then you can use your pall grant to pay off the student loan and not have to worry about it.

I was in the same situation as you except I didn't even have the $100 lol. It is the old catch22 situation. But it is not a lost cause. I went into the financial aid office of the school I am accepted to and said I couldn't attend school unless I get aid but federal financial aid says to get it you have to be enrolled and attending before they will give you squat. At least at my school (Anoka Tech) they let you enroll and attend on the basis that your aid is pending. They of course know it is pending, in what forms (pell grant, fed direct loans, etc.) and how much because they are the one who issues you your award letter based on your FAFSA application Student Aid Report (SAR). Talk to you school financial aid office my friend. Trust me they will do everything they can to help you because they want that money.

That is a common issue. Talk to your financial aid office. Many schools will defer payment until grants, loans, scholarships, etc go through as long as they have copies of your paperwork for the grant. The employees in the office can help walk you through the process.

first, you need to realize that applying for (and your school GETTING) your pell grant is a PROCESS that takes weeks, usually months from beginning to end. MOST students pay attention to and adhere to priority deadlines an YOU being in this situation means to me you did not apply for aid back in Feb and March (8 month ago) like everyone else did. Plan better, and realize that if you don't do this next year you will just be in the same situation you are in now. In other words, as soon as you do your 2010 taxes, you need to do another fafsa!!!! 7 months is enough time to get your aid processed so you won't have to pay up front next year. 1. You don't have to be enrolled in 12 credits to get the pell grant. This is simply wrong info. If you choose to enroll in less, you will get less money. 2. Pell grants are for those who are poor. lol You missed the priority deadline and "you have to pay for your schooling first and then they will give you the Pell" is simply wrong. lol This means they dont expect you to pay for classes up front. But many schools WILL require those who don't apply on time to sign up for a payment plan or pay up front. Many schools will allow those who's aid is "pending' to let payments slide, but if you didn't do your fafsa back in feb or march, this is why.
