  • Answer:

Wow, your child is trying to get an education and you are worried about your credit rating? Some loans are offered by the government, but they will be in her name.If she defaults, it will go on her credit.

the fafsa is not a loan application. IT is an application to see if she qualifys for grants both federal and state. If you want to do a loan it is a seperate application.

Filling out the FAFSA is just an application that will determine what types of aid your stepdaughter is eligible for. It is NOT applying for a loan. Once your FAFSA is processed, the school will offere your daughter a "financial aid package" or "award". This award may include a loan for the student (Stafford or Perkins) and/or one for the parent (PLUS) At this point the student has the option to either accept some, all or none of the loans. Any loan that is accepted will have additional paperwork (promissory notes, ect) If a PLUS loan (parent loan) is offered to her, the only way she would get the loan is if you or your husband actually went through the application process and signed a promissory note. If her school offers her a PLUS loan you just need to decline it. The FAFSA is really just a tool used to determine what types of financial aid the student is eligible for. Good luck!

I'm pretty sure it won't affect your credit until you actually apply for a loan. Grants won't affect your credit, because they are not credit. They are grants of money with very few if any strings attached. They do not need to be repaid, thus estimates of your ability and willingness to repay are not relevant to them. It will only matter if you apply for a loan (and odds are, unless you've got massive savings, she's going to need some kind of loan at some point). If you do get a loan, you want to shop for a bank that is known for holding onto its loans...for not selling them to other banks. Wells Fargo is such a bank. If you have a credit union that does student loans, that's another likely prospect. You don't want your loan to end up in the hands of any of the more vile student loan companies (Sallie Mae).

no, fafsa is only the application for financial aid. Whatever schools she applied to will send her a financial aid package based on your efc (estimated family contribution) and your financial history. Loans may be included in the financial aid packages, but they don't have to be put in your name. Make sure her schools don't require the CSS profile too.
