    Since your quote comes from a book about two brothers who could not understand each other, I would have to say that the river in the quote was the rush of life that divided them—even though it was the river (and fishing) that seemed to bring them together. When I look at a river I see dappled sunlight on its surface, but cannot know what lies beneath or gauge the current. The raindrops flow into the river and become part of it. The words written on the bottoms of the stones alludes to those words that go unspoken, but life and the river have written their words or recorded their passage on them. Haunted? Perhaps the author is haunted by his unresolved relationship with his brother.
