Answer:
If that is not your personality then it wouldn't pay to be false. However, being courteous, considerate and thinking first and foremost of your customers, that will make you a great waitress. I did this for 7 years, was a manager as well, and I was the top server where I worked, I made more tips than anyone else by almost double. And it was all because of who I was, and that I cared most that my people were taken care of as best I could. Even when it was so busy I'd be in tears trying to keep up, I would stop at a table and see if they needed anything. Being attentive is the most important thing you can do - it doesn't take more than a second to glance at a table and see if they need drinks refreshed, or if they are getting impatient, or wanting a checking or needing something else. At most 5 seconds and you can scan the table and their faces. As for smiling and being friendly, that comes from your own personality and if it isn't you it will come across as cheesy. All it really takes is saying hi with warmth - meaning it. The people you serve are there to enjoy a meal with friends or family. Two things can ruin that meal, bad food and bad service. You only have control over one, so make sure you give that. As for the rest, you'll find that the more skilled you become the easier it is to take care of people, and your burden for work will feel much lighter - that is one thing that can make you smile. And so would be a generous tip - knowing that you've made a group of people enjoy their time can also make you smile. And last, doing a good job, knowing you are doing your best, that can certainly give you something to be proud of - and if that doesn't make you smile, nothing will. edit; oh and one last bit of advice - DO NOT flirt, ever - and be sure to pay attention to all your customers, male and female. Many servers tend to only pay attention to the man, DON'T make that mistake, the woman is who you want to be happy.

Introduce yourself. If I am with my grand kids bring crackers or something for them to nibble on as soon as you can. But don't give it to them give it to me. Smile. Don't call me or my husband "honey" Don't come and ask me how everything is when I have not yet had a bit to eat. Don't ask me anything if I have something in my mouth. Smile. Refill my water. Clear the empty plate when necessary. Bring me a clean fork or spoon if I order dessert. Sometime after I order dessert you can bring the check, I just don't want to have to flag you down multiple times.

okay, I want to tell you the bottom line, DONT FLIRT UNLESS YOU LIKE THAT PERSON. I had MANY instances where waitress would 'flirt' with me and I would get burned big time when I found out that all they wanted is money. I suggest if you do Flirt keep it to a minimum, and smile and talk to the customer in a friendly way.

Here's how you win my big tip: Don't ask "what are we having?" You are not dining with me. Don't say "I'm so and so and I'll be taking care of you." Really? Are you a medical professional? Don't ask me if I saved room for dessert. All I can envision is someone taking a dump to make room. Don't take my dining companion's plate while I am still eating. It makes me feel like I am putting on a show while finishing. Do watch for empty glasses and offer refills, a lot. Bring the check promptly.

work hard, be thoughtful of the customer..and MOSTLY BE YOURSELF. That will sell, as you seem to have the quality of being true and nice down pat. Good Luck.

Don't show up with a BIG PHONY SMILE when I'm ready to leave as i haven't seen you for a refill and choked my meal down while you B/s on your damn cell phone my entire meal.

A little can go a long way :) as a fellow server I recommend starting out the meal with a "how are you" and not just the canned "Hi I'm ______" greeting. Also if you notice that people come to your place of employment often, get to know them. Most of my 30% tips come from regulars when I already know their drinks and what they want to eat :) Also, I've learned that paying attention to the kids pays off. Make a trip to the dollar store and get a packet of stickers then cut them into single stickers and hand them out to kids (ASK the parents first or give them to the parents) Either way a little goes a long way. Don't try too hard or your customers will feel that you are being fake with them.

Be upbeat, cheerful, make conversation. Smile. Show some personality.

Smile. Repeat their order - in a cheerful tone - to show that you are making sure to get it right. If a man and woman are together, be sure to acknowledge and greet the woman just as much as the man. Don't ignore her. Don't use words such as "honey" or "sweetie". You may not mean for them to be rude, but some people will take offense, as if you are "talking down" to them. Even if someone looks young, they could be in their early 30s (trust me, I have been working retail for eight years and have had to check IDs when people purchase alcohol or cigarettes). Be nice, but don't make assumptions based on people's appearances. People who look wealthy may leave the worst tips. People who look dirty, tired, and unpleasant may be some of the nicest you meet.

Our favorite waitress at our favorite restaurant for breakfast checks back with us to make sure we have everything that we need a few times and always refreshes my husbands coffee. When its not so busy, she also interacts with us. She gets a good tip every time and a even better one at Christmas. Just having a good personality, enjoying talking to people and being attentive to their needs is all you need.
