What does it mean when they say I have double o negative blood type?

  • So I was donating blood today and the nurse or whatever said I have a very special blood type because its double O negative. I always knew I had O negative but the term double O ...show more

  • Answer:

Double O negative is the genotype associated with the O negative blood group. Since both the O phenotype and the RhD-neg phenotype are recessive, "double O negative" means exactly the same thing as "O negative". If you were only "single O negative", and the other was either an A or a B, you would have A or B type blood. It's special because your blood is the universal donor, and very useful in emergency rooms where you may need to transfuse without having time to be establish the blood type of the recipient.

As you know there is for groups of blood ( A-B-AB-O) and another factor is Rhesus factor ( Rh +-- ) which is important especially for transfusion of the blood. I have not heard such a word although I am working in this field. Maybe the guys mistakenly said this things. Good luck
