When and why was the city of Venice built?

How did venice come to be built on water? why not build a regular city with roads?

    They kinda didn't have a choice. History tells us that the original citizens of Venice were Romans from local communities who were fleeing the Huns and later the Lombards. The islands of the marshy lagoon were more easily defended for them and they began building their settlement there.

Go AZ's answer was very interesting.I always wondered about that.Did you know that Amsterdam in the Netherlands was built on poles pushed into the mud?At least the old part of the city was.This was so that the ships could be unloaded when they arrived without getting stuck in the mud.The city was built on to from there.That is why there are so many canals there.
