Policy Manual for Managers?

I was told by HR that its their policy not to allow managers to write reference letters?

  • is there a reason that might be? should i still request the managers for one since i'm being laid off this month?

  • Answer:

you shouldn't put someone elses job in jeapardy, esp. if you and them both know it's against company policy. you may think the policy sucks, but that doesn't mean you should get them in trouble. just tell the managers that you are going to use them as ref. on your resume.

This is the policy at Macys as well. I think it is for legal reasons. You could ask I guess, but if the policy is to not allow ref letters; then the managers will probably refuse. If they do write one & somecalls about it, they could get into trouble for writing it--something to consider.

I've never heard of this before and to me it's a bad policy. If I were you, I would still request a letter from the managers...especially since you're being laid off. It can't hurt to ask the manager directly. If he/she agrees, you can even draft a letter and see whether they'll be willing to sign it for you.
