How do you multiply fractions with whole numbers?
-
Please explain how to do the following; 16 1/2 x 1/4
-
Answer:
First change the mixed number into an improper fraction. To do this, multiply the denominator 2 with the whole number 16, which is 32, then add on the numerator 1, which gives you 33. So the improper fraction of 16 1/2 is 33/2. Now just multiply the numerators and denominators together: 16 1/2 * 1/4 = 33/2 * 1/4 = 33/8 or 4 1/8 However 16 1/2 is a mixed number, not a whole number. If you want to multiply a whole number and a fraction together, then just multiply the numerators and denominators together like usual. Remember that whole numbers are always over 1; for example 3 is equal to 3/1 as a fraction. So if you were multiplying 3 and 1/2, you would end up with 3/1 * 1/2 = 3/2 or 1 1/2.

Is it 1/2 * 1/4? If so, it is 1.........1 == X ..== 2.........4 The rule multiple top with top then multiply bottom with bottom 1 * 1 ====..= 1/8 2 * 4 If you meant 16 1/2 * 1/4, you need another step. Change 16 1/2 to an improper fraction. The top of the improper fraction is 2*16 +1 = 33 The bottom of the improper fraction is the bottom of the fraction, in this case 2 16 1/2 = 33/2. the rule is the same. 33............1 ===...X...=== 2..............4 Top multiplied with top. 33*1 = 33 Bottom multiplied with bottome = 2*4 = 8 33/4 = 8..1/4

u have to make the whole number into an inproper fraction and then muliply the fractions together, Then put the answer into a mixed number again.
Man Thats Trippy
well 16 1/2 = 16.2=32 32+1=33 = 33/2 33/2 x 1/4 = (you multiply the numerators and the denominators simply) 33/8
Miss. D
You don't, lol. You can just change the fractions to decimals to make it easier. 1/2 is .5 1/4 is .25 16.5 x .25= 4.125
Dude
tell them you used a calculator
Tiffany<3
Change them to improper fractions 16 1/2= 33/2 33/2 x 1/4= 33/8 which also equals 4.125

First, you need to change the 16 to a fraction by putting it over 1. second, combine the 16 over 1 with the 1/2. Then, You need to STOP GOING TO YAHOO ANSWERS FOR FIGURING OUT YOUR HOMEWORK!!! But seriously the first 2 parts are right
John
you mean you want to multiply .. 16 x 1/2 x 1/4=16/8=2 multiply the denominators together first so F easy .. Edit: if u mean 16 1/2 x 1/4 we know that 16.5=16 1/2 =32/2 so it's simply 32/2 x 1/4 =32/8=4

u turn the mixed number (16 1/2) into a fraction by multiplying 16 x 2 then adding 1 to that number and putting that number over 2. then with the two fractions, multiply the top numbers, and get a number, multiply the bottom numbers and get a number, then simplify that fraction if possible
