Use your computer. Get a video capture card then record the tape to your hard drive as an avi file. Then use one of the many free conversion programs to convert the avi file to DVD.

My Dad wanted to do the same thing so he went out and bought a dual DVD Recorder / VHS player - it wasn't too expensive if I remember correctly (sub 200 quid I think). If you can't find anything in your budget you might be able to buy one on Ebay or at a Richer Sounds for less than at Comet etc. In any case I think it should work out cheaper than getting them professionally coverted. What you can do s buy a DVD recorder and with some you can plug your Video player into the DVD recorder thats one way of converting a video onto DVD. Please see link this is where I brought my DVD recorder and got advice and help of what one to buy they also told me about converting videos!

The way I do it is on a VHS player / DVD recorder machine that I bought at Wal-Mart for under $300. It works well and is the most economical way to get it done. It is a lot of work and time consuming, but the results are very good. I make duplicate copies on my computer software (much faster), but the original I make on the other machine. Good luck - you need to get them transferred because VHS tapes will degrade after a few years.
