    I think you are missing the point. The stock market is a quick, general way to measure how healthy (good) the economy is. In particular, it is a good way to tell how confident rich people (those who own real property) are that tomorrow is going to be better than today. The market is telling you that rich people are in a panic -- they expect tomorrow to be much, much, much worse than today. If tomorrow is going to be very bad for rich people -- doesn't logic suggest that it will be very very bad for the middle class and very very very bad for the poor? The short answer is that a crashing stock market is similar to rich business owners pulling their money out of companies and shutting them down. What happens to the workers when companies shut their doors and go out of business?

YOU better start caring. It affects everything in the economy. You are invested in it even if you have ZIP in the actual market. Because it creates growth and capital for businesses to expand. if it completely collapses like it is doing right now, you will not be able to find work and will be standing in a soup line. So it isn't just the rich and the ones like me that are invested in this market that need to be concerned! Also, any of you Obama voters should see how he is ruining this economy or market from ever returning for years.......new lows again today. Obama and DEMS are bad for business!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the stock market is what drives our economy. whether you're invested in it or not doesn't matter. if the stock market starts to crash so does everything else...and i mean everything. our stock market is our backing of the dollar. our money has no real substance backing...meaning it's not back by gold or silver....it back by America's "good faith" or credit. The Dow Jones shows the rest of the world what a America is worth and whether they should invest in us or not...i.e. buying our bonds. For instance, China hold $1 billion of American bonds that at anytime they can "cash in"...not to mention other countries around the world hold our bonds also. NEway, what i'm trying to say is that if our stock market gives the "dollar" value. Without the stock market our dollar wouldn't even be worth the paper/cloth it's printed on.

First, I'm not rich. No one gives me any free money for the stock market either honey. I invest my money so that I will have enough to eventually retire and live comfortably. I work hard for what I have -- I don't get anything for free!

Because they make a lot of money out of the investments they make in the stock market. And if it goes down they lose some of the money they make or all of the money the invested in particular stocks. A good amount of wealth can be gained and lost in the stock market. And some people rely on the money they produce from it. Some people even became wealthy because of it.
