How do I go about getting affordable/any health insurance?

  • -22 -located in Philadelphia, PA -single -insurance is not offered at workplace -no parents -got denied for Medicaid Any answers are greatly appreciated!

  • Answer:

Heathcare.gov Type in your state name to show a list of providers. Get a high deductible plan to save money. If you are young and in good health, you could get a high deductible plan for about only $300 a month or so.

The first question is whether you want insurance that is called "affordable" insurance officially, or you want insurance that you can afford. They are not the same, and you cannot have both. "Affordable" insurance means insurance that is more affordable than other insurance would be for someone who was 60, but less affordable than other insurance would be for someone who is 22. Getting "affordable" insurance could cost you 2 or 3 times as much money as getting better insurance without the word "affordable" in its name. If you want the least expensive insurance that you can get, then you go to a website or an insurance agent or broker, and you ask for the prices of the different insurances that are available, being very, very careful not to use the word "affordable". Using that word may restrict your search to insurance that meets the legal definition of the word affordable, which could cost more than regular insurance. If you truly want insurance that meets the legal definition of affordable, and are willing to pay thousands of dollars extra to get that word in the name, then go to the government agency that runs the affordable insurance programs where you live, and ask if you qualify. But first, check that you really have the money, because it is a lot more expensive.

Talk to a local agent. Start with the guy that does your renters/house/car insurance, and if they can't give you a quote, ask them for a referral to someone who can. Keep in mind, if you're perfectly healthy and not overweight, a good health insurance policy without maternity benefits at your age, and a $2500 deductible, could cost you $75 a month. If you want maternity, it will easily be another $300 a month - if you can even buy it. And if you're already pregnant, of course, you're uninsurable.

The first responder is a good illustration of how little people know about anything. You call a health insurance broker and buy a plan....a plan that is more expensive now than it was 4 years ago.
