Although it is a good idea, there are several problems with implementation. First and foremost, is that the wasted food has been exposed to humans, either coming from their plates as not eaten or placed on the buffet counters and breathed upon. In both cases, there is the potential for the food to be contaminated with viruses and bacteria from people who may be carrying disease. The second problem is the sanitary preservation of the food while at sea so that it would still be consumable when the ship returned to port. Since, in many cases, the return port is in the USA, the stringent requirements of the Food and Drug Administration as well as Department of Agriculture would likely make this idea impossible.

It's a great idea if it's not already prepared food.

Nothing. That would be a great idea, as tough as the times are now, and wouldn't it be some kind of tax deduction if you did? Great idea!

I think it's a wonderful idea - most of that stuff does go to waste but from what I understand they try to keep it to a minimum level as possible. Maybe the cruise companies can set up agreements with Salvation Army. Most of the food is not even at it's expiration date yet, just that it wont' make it to the next port before being so.

good idea - the only thing is that someone could get sick and sue. then again if they people accepting the food promise not to claim then... the same with hospitals, schools, uni's etc ...they could feed homeless folk with all the waste

I agree with you.

It is not as easy as that but there must be a way around the food laws to allow it to happen. I think we shouldn't support Industries that have as much impact as cruise liners. The fuel they use is huge & why do we all need to have so many holidays anyway.
