  • Answer:

No they should not be able to. P Platers think they are good drivers and it goes to their head that they can drive. I have been there and done that myself and it is not until you are older do you realise how inexperienced you are and how you ARE NOT a good driver. To allow P Platers to drive more powerful cars is ridiculous. The accident and death toll is way too high already.

When LAMS was introduced to motorcycling, the novice rider death rate halved. This system not only limits the power to weight ratio of a bike a novice rider can use, but includes rider training, what would be considered an advanced driver training course. This is a brilliant system and I think it should be transferred across to cars. It shouldn't be as simple as no v8's turbos or superchargers. A twenty year old turbo Volvo would be a fine car, but a new s2000 (NA 4cyl 2L) is probably a touch on the dangerous side.

No offence against L's or P's , but no. when I was 16 my girlfriends and i were going to go driving with some guys our mates who had there p's and back then were able to drive whatever, well I wasn't allowed to go, and the car my friend was in was a v8, and the guy was on his p's due to get his blacks (full licence) and was showing off and turned too sharpe on a bend while driving really fast, well there was a huge accident, and my friend died, this year will be her 22 yr anniversary, and i can still remember like it were y'day. Two weeks later, 2 guys from my form were driving a hot car, all done up, but not a v8, they too crashed and died, now that is 3 lives lost in a matter of 3 weeks, we were all friends, things never were the same after that, you know we all think at that age we are invinable, we are not, we only have one life, so we should enjoy it. The police and rta don't make these rules to piss off you younger ones, they are trying to save your lives. I still remember what it feels like to be young and sitting in a fast car, it was such a buzz, but due to that, I have never felt the same, has anyone close to you died from being behind the wheel? It changes your life forever, I know most p platers are responsible, but there are alot out there who aren't, and by having these new rules, just might save your life, or the ones you love. Cheers, Minny :-)

I got a V8 as my first car but I did get my licence much later in life. I think you should have at least a few years experience b4 owning one. It's only that some young people drive so fast now and are killing themselves and others. Thats why we would not want a P plater driving such a powerful car. Lets face it a lot of 4 cyllinder cars are powerful enough while still learning how to handle a vehicle in an emergency and under speed. :)

I guess the theory is that a P plater doesn't have enough driving experience to be able to deal with a powerful car. But that said there are people who have been driving for years who aren't confident drivers who also wouldn't be able to cope with it. I think a better system would be to make people do some defensive driving lessons in a powerful car and sit a test to be allowed to drive one.

No they definetly should not be able to drive high powered cars. Why is it that P plater car drivers can drive what ever they want, but P plate motorcyclists are limited? At least with a bike, it is usually only the rider who is injured/killed. With a car the driver usually lives but everyone else in the car, and the people they hit, die. The law should be equal for all.

No they should not be able to. Invest the money on a house. Cars are a waste of money. And why do we need cars that go so fast..not to mention the petrol.

v8s and supercharged are way too powerful, and dangerous - its crazy to think that u can control it - but turbos do sound cool!

I think they could have had the same effect or better by enforcing a driving defence course that you must complete before you get your p's and once every 12 months until you get your opens. most people dont know how to control a 4cyl in the wet let alone a v8. the other option would be to restrict the power output on a turbo by having a max PSI set for your P's so you still have the car you want but not the full force of it's power till you know how to handle it. I am on my opens and have been for a few years and still when the turbo kicked in a little fast on my fiance's old car, i had it sideways and it's not as easy as it looks to bring it back (not with a lock diff anyway hehe!!) but in all respect they did it for a reason, not all young drivers are idiots but not all are good either.
