What are my chances of getting into an Ivy League school?
-
I'm a high school junior. I started designing websites as a freshman, that two years later, has became a pretty successful business for me. Unfortunately, I spent a lot more time designing websites than working on g.p.a, so at the end of junior year I have about a 3.2. I've quit web designing for now to work on school, but I don't know what I should do to better myself for applying to a League college. If I was able to score a 34-36 on my ACT and finish out my senior year with a 4.0, what would my chances of getting into an Ivy League look like!

Answer:
Without more detail about your background, I would say they aren't great. However, prove me wrong. Given that your academics are not as high as they possibly could be, I would think that your chances are not good. I do not think that admissions officers will be that impressed by your successful business, unfortunately. For one thing, your fellow applicants may have done the same thing while achieving good grades. Or, maybe the admissions officers aren't impressed by your entrepreneurial endeavor. From my experience, they are looking for applications that catch their attention: doing genetic research on fruit flies, or building houses in the DRC or some shit like that. That said, I've been out of the college admissions applications process for a while now. So like I said: prove me wrong.

Before I answer this question I want to share some information from a survey of business leaders. Here is what they say about the importance of where you go to college: Where the candidate received a degree Very important 9% somewhat important 37% not very important 40% not important at all 14% : http://www.insidehighered.com/news/2014/02/26/provosts-business-leaders-disagree-graduates-career-readiness#ixzz2ufrR7ovT Inside Higher Ed I put this first as I think your question assumes that any Ivy makes a huge difference in your future success. Based on the data above and based on what I assume your future interest might be, can you draw some conclusions about whether it really is of much importance where you go to collge? The good news is that is matters far less these days where you go to school than what you do wherever you go. The data is there to prove this. The bad news is that your chance of getting into any highly selective school are slim. Very slim. Your gpa is far below what virtually any highly selective school looks for. In addition, you have stopped doing the things that would have given you the chance to prove you have a special talent that you are following through on. In addition, sad to say, but you are Asian and getting into Ivies as a part of this demographic is far harder than any other group. Ivies and other highly selective schools turn down between 75%-95% of their overall applicants and the stats are much worse for Asians. The good news then is that you should forget about Ivies but still do as well as you can and try to get into a school that has programs tat suit your academic and other interests. Go to a less selective school and be the star. If you do this you will have great thing ahead of you. The skills you have are ones you should continue to develop, perhaps not at the expense of doing poorly academically, but college is supposed to prep you for the world and you already are in the process of developing skills that will get you a great job. Forget the names of the schools and find a place you will thrive. Really. Listen to the business leaders and save yourself time and money and heartache going for something that is very likely beyond reach.

This question was originally asked by a high school freshmen. As a freshmen, you would continue to improve your grades and become involved with extracurricular activities. It is way too earlier to tell if your high school record is strong enough. Your record won't be completed until two and a half years from now, the time you apply to university. My answer for this question would be a little different since there is only five to six months until he or she would submit his or her application by December. As a high school junior, frankly it is to late to do anything that would improve your chances of being admitted into an "Ivy League" university. Frankly designing websites is not an excuse for not performing well in coursework. Other applicants have developed websites and maintained a near perfect GPA. These are reflected in an average GPA between 3.8 and 4.2 of admitted "Ivy League" students. Stanford's is 4.1 on a 4 scale. These top student take between 8 and 12 AP classes. They also have near perfect ACT and/or SAT scores. What worse is only your first semester of your senior year would be evaluated. It is a track record you do not have nor can you have by December of this year.Other administrators may disagree, but based on your grades, you are no where near ready for an "Ivy League" university. Looking at the details, I would recommend a two-year college such as http://www.foothill.edu/cs/ where you would have a new track record to transfer as a junior, see http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/rankings/most-transfers

Your chances are currently the same as everyone else's. College Admissions Officers usually don't consider middle school grades. Good luck in high school!
