Answer:
Get a 90s vintage Land Rover Discovery. Make sure it has high mileage and leaks a lot of fluids. This is a sign of a genuine Land Rover. Also ensure that the electrics are not functioning properly. Any English car with properly functioning electrics is not a proper English car.

On ice - front wheel drive - loses grip and goes straight on into a hedge rear wheel drive - loses grip and spins round with the rear end going into the hedge all or 4 wheel drive - heavier car/jeep/whatever loses grip and still ploughs on straight into a hedge There are loads of cars and multi purpose vehicles that could fit the bill. You have not given us enough to go on to suggest anything (capacity, budget, new used etc etc etc) No 4x4 is a substitute for good driving in poor conditions and they still get stuck when its icy. 2 wheel drive on sheet ice - no grip stuck 4 wheel drive on sheet ice = still no grip, stuck with the cars! They are only really good for packed snow and mud and many are actually useless at those too.

Its the tires that give you traction on ice and snow. Not the number of wheels driven. Get proper winter tires and you don't need 4WD/AWD.

All of these answers are excellent! I want to add this TRACTION CONTROL! I had a PU (dodge dakota rt- Big wide tires!) and a friend in a cougar RWD. We were in a bad ice storm and my pu had limited slip differential. His car did not have any traction control. My pu took off with little wheel spin and always straight. His car was all over the road. I thought he was playing and we switched. Needless to say he didn't want to switch back after a few miles. I now have a Honda Accord FWD with traction control and it is the best I have ever had in all my driving years! (about 30). In snow or ice there is no stopping it (literally in ICE).
Bugatti Veyron!!! Good car plenty of grunt AND permanent 4 wheel drive. Bet it's useless in the snow - though! Suzuki 'Jimny' - a mini jeep & will go most places a full fat Land Rover Defender will - at 1/4 the price!!

missy your best bet would be any subaru since there all come standard with awd and if you have ever traveled to snowy mountain regions you would see a ton of them incredible vehicles and the newer impreza's have very good gas mileage on a side note if you like other brands here is a partial list of popular cars that do come awd but there snow performance lacks compaired to a subarus symertrical awd system ford fusion AWD chrsler 300 AWD most newer infinities can be had AWD BMW has AWD offerings as well Volvo has some AWD cars as well hope this helps as far as a car offering year round fun and safety and security id chose a subaru of any model
Subarus are good - reliable and tough. But remember that 4WD does not prevent you from slipping and skidding any more than 2WD - what it DOES do is give you more traction. So it's still better in snow/ice but it's not perfect! Other points to consider: - If a car is 2WD, it will be better in snow if it's front wheel drive (on newer and/or smaller cars) vs. rear wheel drive (on older and/or larger cars). That's because the weight of the engine helps a front wheel drive car get more traction. - Sometimes the same car model is available both as a 2WD and a 4WD, so you need to ask which one it is. - Newer cars have traction control, this is helpful in bad conditions whether they are 2WD or 4WD. - There is a difference between "all wheel drive" vs. "4 wheel drive". The former is more common on trucks and SUVs and power is (usually) split evenly to all 4 wheels, but the latter is more common on cars and typically only sends power to the rear wheels when it's needed.

Well what do you want to do with it? I have my 1966 f100 4x4, if I wanted another 4x4 I would probably get a Jeep CJ5. What I want is not what most people want. As for 4x4 vs RWD vs FWD FWD is great for people that don't know how to drive it has the weight up front so it is easier to get going, but don't try carrying any speed around corners, it will understeer and you can go off the road. RWD is fine if you know what you are doing and put some weight in the back and use snow tires, it will want to over steer which is more controllable if you know how to drive, not just sit behind a wheel. 4x4 will get you moving the best but will have under and over steer depending on the situation and doesn't stop any better than any other car. AWD is the best and there isn't much that can happen to a road to stop it, still has the same brakes though. Also where do you live where this is an issue? I have lived in northern states my whole life, including Washington, New York, and Indiana, if you have a set of chains and some sand any car will do fine on most roads. Only time it can be an issue is in some kind of blizzard with 10 inches of snow on the ground and the car is bottomed out, but how often does that happen? Once every couple years.

OK!! this is to the fool who said audi's are the best in snow. you are a FOOL and know NOTHING about cars. ever heard of a Subaru Impreza WRX, or maybe the STi? SOOO much better than that audi. Audi's also have problems, and when they have problems its crazy expensive to fix them. I aint sayin that the STi is the only way to go, but that its waaay better than ur Audi. Dont be talkin crap when you know nothing..

Audis are the best cars for winter conditions - End of story. Anyone who tells you otherwise is lying and has never driven an Audi. They are proven to be the most effective at not sliding and theya re one of the best cars for protection.
