it's an earthquake that struck New Madrid, MO in Dec. 1811 It is thought to be one of the most powerful quakes to ever hit the USA. Estimates on it's strength are around 8.0 on the Richter scale a few new lakes were formed and it was reported that it could be felt as far as Boston, MA The New Madrid Fault is still active, and there are frequently felt tremors in the area. The area is at risk for another major earthquake in the future. The New Madrid Fault was formed about 750 million years ago during the breakup of the Rodinia supercontinent (Not to be confused with Pangaea which occurred 500 million years later) There were two other powerful earthquakes in that area between 1811 and 1812
