Yes you can make oil with only coconut oil, although it will have great lather, it may be drying to the skin as too much of a good thing isn't always the best. For a better soap it is best to use at least 3 different oils. As for herbs 1/2 cup to 1 cup of pulverized (finely ground) herbs is recommened. Here is a 3 lb batch of soap using only coconut oil that i ran through Chris Matthes soap trmplate (soap calc). - found on Kathy Millers website - http://www.millersoap.com 41 oz. coconut oil 5.4 oz. lye 13.6 oz. water 1/2 to 1 cup finely ground herbs weigh out your oil, lye and water on a scale - these need to be accurate... Add you lye to your water in a well ventilated area, melt your oil - when water/lye mixture and oil cool down to 100-120 slowly add you lye water to your oil stirring costantantly at light trace add your scent (1-2 oz and your herbs) - at trace pour into your lined mold, wrap mold in towel and place in box - cover and leave for 12-48 ours unwrap, remove from mold, cut and let cure for 4 weeks before packaging and giving as gifts. Here is a recipe i use when teaching my soapmaking class 21 ounces Veg. Shortening (1 pound 5 ounces) 9 ounces Coconut Oil 12 ounces Canola 14 ounces of cold water 6 ounces lye crystals Temperatures: 100 - 120 degrees Melt together first 2 oils and add 3 oil after - to help oils cool Trace by hand should be in about 20 minutes, add scent at trace. Cure about 24-48 hours before cutting. *Note a stick blender will speed the process along.

One way to figure it out how much lye is this-- multiply the amount of coconut oil in ounces that you plan to use by .190 (or .1805 if you're planning to make a milder soap). The resulting number will be the amount of lye you need (in ounces). The lye I use comes in a twelve ounce container, so to minimize having to handle the lye too much, I usually use 24 oz. of cold water for every 85 ounces of fat (in you're case, that's the coconut oil-- I like to use a combination of palm, coconut, and olive oil, but that's my preference). Everyone has their own way, but I'd add the camias leaf extract at trace so that it doesn't change too much while curing. As for how much-- I think that's a personal preference, I would probably go with anywhere between 1.5 - 4 ounces. So I hope that helps. Let me know if you need more specific information. Let us know how it turns out!!
