How to write a good argumentative essay?

How do I properly write an argumentative essay? ?

  • I have to do an argumentative essay for my history class and I have to take a side that I agree with and state why I agree with that, along with supporting facts but I don't know how ...show more

  • Answer:

I just wanted to remind you that when you are writing an argumentative essay, you do stick to one side of the argument, but you also need to bring in the major points of both of the arguments. If you do not do this, then your paper will be, not argumentative. It will sound very naive and unintelligent. Even if you do not believe at all in the other side of the argument, you must mention both the pros and cons of both sides, and wrap up your opinion in the conclusion paragraph. good luck!

Never write "In my opinion" or "I believe". People assume these two things already in an essay. That's what an essay is: your opinion. Best to write it in third person. :) I think what you have so far is good. Now, to put in your thesis, something like, "Europeans found Native Americans to be a threat to the potentially valuable land....blah blah blah..." I don't want to give you an exact sentence because #1. You could be cited for plajarism #2. You don't learn anything from that. Then, go on to the topic of each body paragraph (evidence of their intentional riddence). This statement is still in the intro. Usually it begins with "This is shown by..." or "Evidence can be seen when..." Other hints: Don't use words like "maybe" "perhaps" "probably" or "seems". An essay is supposed to be direct and supposedly provides unquestionable evidence. Use precise dates and quotes and always cite your quotes. Make sure your facts are straight. Don't make anything up...lol. Use at least 3 pieces of evidence in each of your body paragraphs Be concise (get to the point) and don't use wordplay, including cliches, old rhymes, sayings, etc. Believe me, teachers hate that. Well, good luck on the essay...hope this helped! :)

NO! Never *ever* write an essay in first person, or state that it is your opinion in the essay. Write it as if it were a FACT (for example, "The exploration of the Americas was an accident" NOT "I believe the exploration of the Americas was an accident"). In the introduction, you should briefly outline what your argument is (eg. "The exploration of Americas was clearly an accident. [Argument 1] and [argument 2] clearly demonstrate this. Blah blah blah." The introduction you already have is not too bad. Then in the middle, you go into your argument in more detail; you expand on the outline you made in the introduction. Finally, is the conclusion, wrapping everything up... like the introduction, don't go into details in the conclusion, but use different wording to the intro.

The way you're writing now is ok. You're writing an argumentative essay using "I" or "my" is fine. You definitely need to write way more; It's only two sentences. I suggest that you break your current sentences apart to make it easier to read. Also the introduction is where you introduce your point of view.(just as the name states)Do that closer to the end of the paragraph. Once you are finished have someone else read it out loud so they catch any mistakes that you didn't.(your computer wont correct anything but grammar and spelling mistakes) ------------------------- don't use cheats! teachers will check to see if it came from somewhere else.(it is really easy to catch) myth, most English language teachers look for 5-6 sentences per paragraph. ------------------------
