How can we see the light from a very distant galaxy?

What is the furthest star in our Galaxy that we can see, and how far away is it from the earth in light years?

  • Answer:

With your naked eye, Deneb. It's about 3000 light years away, though the distance is not very precisely known. Addendum: I've seen M33 naked eye, though this requires exceptional conditions. In a telescope, the farthest I've seen is about 100 million light years. Some day I will try for 3C273.

There is no such star because we do not have a complete list of all 400 billion stars in our galaxy. Even if we did, we could not make a precise enough distance measurement to tell. The approximate distance to the farthest objects which are gravitationally bound by our galaxy is probably on the order of several times the galactic diameter or several hundred thousand light years.

The furthest star we can see with our naked eye is the Andromeda galaxy which is about a million light years away.
