What's the best way to study for a test when the teacher just gives you notes?

  • My teacher talks a lot and writes things on the board. He tells us to take notes. I write a lot of notes, but I don't know the best way to study for the test, besides looking at ...show more

  • Answer:

What you need to do is rewrite your notes in a form that will make sense to you. If the content is hard to understand, re-write it in a personal translation. Create questions from your notes and type them up as a practice test. Ask your teacher what type of questions there will be on the test (eg. Multiple choice, matching, short answer, essay, combination.) Develop your practice test off of that. After you have done this, grade your test and look at the ones you have missed. Make a seperate page for weakness points in the content and study extra hard on those. Memorize key words and definitions. Recite the reasoning for the logic of the content. When this is completed, team up with a struggling classmate. Teach him/her what you know. In order to teach, you have to know. Be sure that you get good sleep the week of the test and eat healthy. Always wash your hair on the night before the test. It makes you feel very put-together and a bit more confident. Good luck.

Simply rewrite the notes or spice it up with Flash cards, or relate them to situations more interesting (if the subject is boring). Music, fashion, religion, games. Trivia games with friends.

as you go... hilight the main points or the points your teacher makes obvious that he wants you to know... then put anything hilighted on notecards with a question on one side and the answer on the other.

What I usually do is try to make questions about the notes. That forces you to think about the subject matter, really think it through, and then if you answer those, that also helps. It can also be useful to rewrite your notes, to summarize, and to organize them on paper...it takes a bit of time, but it helps to get everything straight in your head. Also having someone quiz you on the material is good, I find.
