What is a product concept?

What are some examples of a product that copied the concept of some other product but still got more success than the original product?

  • Microsoft Windows does not fit the example because although it stole the concept of Apple but it was launched before Apple. The question seeks the examples in which original product was launched first but still got lesser success.

    Kiddicraft Blocks were launched years before Lego. I'm not sure why they weren't successful - probably because of their launch/implementation. However, their blocks were the exact thing copied by Lego. iPhone's notifications are copied from Android. But I wouldn't call it more successful than the original Android idea because Android is all over the place

There are several examples of ideas that were more successfully implemented by the company that did it second (or third or fourth for that matter). I wouldn't be so harsh as to call them copying, but they clearly understood the strength of the original idea and shortcomings in its current implementation to do it themselves. Search engines, for example, existed well before Google. However, Google, knew how to do it better than Yahoo, AOL or any other search engine at the time. They took an existing concept and just implemented it way better than anyone before them. Quora is really no different than Yahoo! answers in concept. It is just a much better implementation and a much cleaner interface than Yahoo! answers. Quora is now beginning to have much more functionality than Yahoo! answers ever had, but at its crux, its the same concept.

The problem is the definition of success. You ca say that the on going patent battle between apple and samsung is an example of both companies sharing features and beating each other quarter by quarter. You can also say that Samsung copied Pebble and launched a smart watch before them. And even apple copying their design idea from croc shoes :p @ sanchitkhera7
