What's student life at Boston University like?

As a newly admitted graduate student to Masters program in Computer Science at Boston University, what are some of the things I should know about life in Boston?

  • Answer:

I'm an undergraduate Sophomore CS major at Boston University.... Welcome! Life in Boston is pretty similar to life near in big city on the East Coast / Midwest, so (depending where you are from) you might not have much change to adapt to. The winters are long and cold, the summers hot and humid, and pretty much nobody comes here for the weather. Around BU there are a couple neighborhoods you should know about. At the farthest west end of the school is Allston, which is pretty much a student ghetto of run down houses and house parties. South of the school is Brookline, which is where the much nicer off-campus student and residential resides. Make sure you get a T-pass, unlimited rides on the T is super useful commuting across campus and across Boston. The nice restaurant area is North End (which you can reach from the green line on the T, the same one that runs through BU), which is home to many renowned Italian restaurants. The Boston Common is also along the same T line, which is the countries oldest park, and is nice during the spring/summer. Across the Charles river is MIT, and you can make good use of going to their CS and Entrepreneurship events while at BU (many are posted on http://www.greenhornconnect.com/). Also, as a grad student, you can get a job as a Teaching Fellow teaching and grading our undergraduate courses. If you do so, say hi to me! Best of luck at BU.
