The newer generations of data center hardware are boxes. These machines, power supplies, and racks are designed at Facebook to be particularly energy-efficient, easy to maintain, and cheap. A lot of details of the Open Compute Project, as the name suggests, are completely public, and in fact an effort is underway to turn it into a collaborative project for creating modern data center hardware.
