What is strategic Information Systems planning?

I have done BBA from India and now I am planning to pursue MS in Information Systems and want to go back to India. So the questions here is, will this be worth? What is the scope this is having in India?

  • Answer:

Curriculum: Curriculum would be roughly the same in both countries. In many US universities, MS in Information Systems falls under systems management category rather than STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) and focusses on functional/system management. Indian degree migh have some more s/w development component. US is a permanent member of Washington and Sydney accords hence, US degree is recognized in more countries than Indian(provisional member) degree. You will work as a systems/business analyst, IT system auditor or in development . Since you have BBA and not CS you would probably not work as a developer. MS in IS would definitly improve your skillset and serve as an extension if your BBA degree. There is high demmand for business analysts in both contries. Work scope/profile-wise your degree would be equally worth in either country.   Cost: Cost of education for MS IS is roughly $50000-60000. If you decide to finance this with a bank loan it would charge you approximately 13% (12% if you are a female) interest. Repayment period is typically 3-5 years which means your monthly installment would be aprox. $1500.   Salary: If you decide to work in the US you will attact approximate compensation of $3000.month. With this, you can easily pay off your living/misc. cost and manage to pay $1500 loan installment. Do this calculation with your prospective pay in India (a third of what you would typically make in the US). Now purchasing power of rupee in India is higher when you pay living costs so there will be more money available towards your loan. With this consideration you should be able to repay your loan in about 7-10 years.   Work authorization in the US: You are allowed to work for 12 months on F-1 visa after your graudation. You can take up some job in that period after which your employer has to get you a work visa. You can work on a temp job to somewhat lighten your edu loan burdon.   Culture: Advantage of pursuing MS here is you wil get to meet people from all over the world. It is pretty interesting to me. American culture itself is diverse and fascinating. You get a different perspective on your values. Consider this aspect if you are interested. Weigh this against how much you want to stay in India and decide where you wish to pursue your degree.   Good luck !   P.S. US is a great country and Americans are nice and kind people :)
