How do you become a professor?

How do you approach your university professor to become an adviser in your new startup?

  • Provided that a startup is fairly doing well and related to academia. Has been out of school for 6 years during which there was not any communication. But, professor knows you personally and you worked as a TA/RA for the same professor.

  • Answer:

    Send him an email with a short summary of what you are doing. Ask for a quick meeting/ coffee to "pick his brain". Gauge his interest and how useful his answers are. Follow up with an email asking him if he would like to be an advisor taking into account how the meeting went, and if you thought he was helpful.
