A lot of Indians import products for regular use. Why don't we consume the same products made by Indian companies? What's the reason imported goods are dominating domestically produced goods in the market?

The products we use everyday are mostly imported. Why don't we buy more of them from companies based in India?

Answer:
Simple reasons. 1. Advertisements Indian products do not get advertised. Every single minute, on TV on the Internet, on Radios and on Newspapers, you see advertisements for Coca-Colas and Pepsies. Do you even know that an authentic Indian drink called "Bovanto" exists? It is natural, healthy and tasts better than the colas ever will. But, they are not advertised and hence we don't get the opportunity to even try them. 2. Reach of Imports The same Pepsies and Colas are found even in the remotest corners of our country. That is because they have the money to market the product, they have the reach to establish agencies even in villages and other remote regions of our country. 3. Our Foolishness The aforementioned "Bovanto" has been around for nearly 100 years. It was established in 1910s. But, when Pepsi made its way into the Indian market around 40 years ago, they gave out their product at the same price as Bovanto. So, we foolishly thought "Heck, why should I buy the Indian crap when I get the exotic foreign product for the same rate?" and we all bought Pepsi. After a few years, the competition was so one-sided that companies like Bovanto had to shut down shop. Now, Pepsi was the only product in the market. They increased their price and we had no other do. What they did was shrewd. First, they eliminated the competition and took a stronghold in the market so that we were left with no other go. 4. The Star Power From MS Dhoni to Shahrukh Khan, every one wants us to use these imports. The star power that these people bring certainly play a role in the domination that these imported products have over their Indian counter-parts.

I would guess it is to do with economies of scale resulting in low cost of production of these goods, combined with heavy marketing budgets which make it easier for us to buy, say a Dove Shampoo over Shikakai. A global brand also comes with a stamp of quality, which sometimes is dicey when it comes to desi brands. Having said that, there's one Indian brand which I relish and is world renowned - Old Monk! Cheers to that :)

Cheap mentality: Natural human craving for something we see as rich. Except in India, we crave for anything which is 'white' or something that sounds like 'American'. Lack of budget: Believe me or not. The amount which Indian manufacturers can raise for marketing is peanuts when compared to what these multinational companies do. Lack of trust: An overwhelming majority of our middle class users don't trust local manufacturers. While it is true some local manufacturers behave irresponsibly. How many of you know "Shiv Naresh" in the field of sportswear? Foreign brand is status: Given the fact that both Samsung and Micromax offer similar customer service and the products are of similar quality, yet many people would buy Samsung mobiles just because they think local products are cheap and their prestige is at stake if they use local products. Western looking/ sounding advertisements: If one observes many of the advertisements, almost many of the big brands have models in their advertisements who feel more like average American/Westerner than Indian. There is a reason to it. Our middle classes are craving to emulate Westerners in looks and behavior to as much extent as they can. So these advertisements are targeted at upwardly mobile middle classes and rich classes. Perhaps that is the reason why recently we have even our Indian manufacturers are naming their products with "Western" sounding names, using Western models to give an international flair.

Indian products aren't there yet in terms of quality & branding, most of the companies here are narrow minded & Lazy, How can these guys develop better products? It's like an Husband asking himself a question every time "why my wife doesn't like me?" it's not his wife's fault but his for sure being not up to her. Can anyone replace Coke or Pepsi with Indian? People tried but later settled for $$$, is that all Indian businesses want, Just like those Old crooked kings who sold India about centuries ago? If you can find better alternatives for Reebok, Adidas, Woodland, Levis, Wrangler, Google, Facebook, LinkedIn, Energizer, Duracell, Pfizer, Samsung, Apple, Microsoft, Dell, Sony, Cadbury, Unilever, P&G, KFC, Crappy McDonald's, Pizza Hut, Colgate, Gillette, Honda, Ford, Suzuki, BMW, Benz, Heineken, Budweiser, JCB, Hitachi, Johnson & Johnson, JP Morgan Chase, Soft bank, FedEx, DHL ,..........................................................................................................etc & Hollywood Movies. If we Try Replacing our products with Indian products, try working for Indian Companies & also creating better products not just for the sake of money & if everyone of us start the revolution today no foreign company would dare to enter India. Just like China :) Before Evil Dutch East India Company came to India, India had 30% share of global GDP & it was called as Golden Sparrow & everyone wanted a piece of it. Now it's just 7% & our population share is about 20%, so we have lot of problems here to solve if we just keep going at current rate definitely we need 50+ Years.
