What are the best New England ski resorts?

Answer:
I grew up in Maine and have done a lot of skiing there. The best in Maine is Sunday River. A lot of people prefer Sugarloaf, but I wouldn't bother with "The Loaf." Sunday River is a lot closer to any place that anybody on Quora might conceivably be coming from (i.e. you'll spend less of your time in a car, more on the slopes), and I think the skiing at Sunday River is better.

For the slightly insane skier, which I once was, may I suggest; http://www.mountwashingtonavalanchecenter.org/. http://timefortuckerman.com/ You hike in you hike up. No crowds, no lift lines.

Stowe is upscale and pampering. The Stowe Mountain Lodge is especially nice and luxurious. It's great for a relaxing vacation. Plus, parking is in a heated underground garage and they have 'mandatory' valet. http://www.stowemountainlodge.com Killington is the biggest and offers a lot of terrain variety. http://www.killington.com/winter/index.html Mad River Glen and Mount Snow are low key and rustic--great if you prefer an old school atmosphere. http://www.madriverglen.com http://mountsnow.com

Here are my top 3 in New England (worth noting that I haven't skied Stowe or Jay which I've heard are great too) 1) Sugarbush- Something for everyone with great tough runs and some nice groomers. The narrow, steep runs of Castlerock are fantastic along with unmatched trail skiing in Slide Brook. Don't forget Mount Ellen, the largest, lift serviced, vertical you can ski in New England. 2) Sugarloaf- Tons of vertical and the snowfields are very challenging. Still need to head back and check out all the new terrain. 3) Killington- "The Beast", as it's known, is huge and has a great variety of runs. Honorable mention: Mad River Glen- On a powder day, you can't beat the classic New England skiing at Mad River. Most underrated: Cannon- I feel like Cannon doesn't get it's due. Its got some real steep, difficult stuff. Hopefully they can continue to integrate and improve the Mittersill area. Most Overrated: Sunday River- I have a feeling some people might disagree with me on this one. White Heat and Oz have some great stuff but, in my opinion, Sunday River is not a "Top 5" mountain that most make it out to be. My reasoning: I feel like I'm constantly going across traverses to get from one side to the other. Don't believe me? Check out True-up Vertical tool which "In a nutshell, it represents the most vertical distance at a resort that can be achieved on commonly skied, lift-served, continuous fall-line runs." http://mountainvertical.com/best-skiing-in-new-england.php Essentially, Sunday River's self-reported vertical is overstated because it is impossible to ski from the highest point, top of Oz, to the lowest point, White Cap lodge, in one continuous run. Again, just one guy's opinion. Happy Trails!
