The world of design and the design of the world?

What does the world feel about designers who have studied design from India?

  • what they feel about them in general, What do they feel about their education? What good colleges in India have they heard about. By asking this I'm not trying to be racist, just trying to ascertain what the world feels about design education in India and what is the world's advice to young designers from India who are looking to work globally, especially in the field of visual communication design. Also listing what you think makes a good designer in general helps a lot. What do you feel about IDC, NID and Srishti as design schools?

  • Answer:

First thing that comes to mind—and what I see in applications— are the cultural differences in how a designer approaches a problem: rich visuals etc. Beyond that I find that a really good designer is capable of adjusting their style and approach depending on the cultural context, AND argumenting on whys and whats of their work. At this level it does not matter where she/he has studied but the work speaks for itself.

IDC, NID, and DSK are a couple of design institutions known globally for one or the other type of work they have done or assisted in. All of them have different patterns of teaching. Some follow semester style, some have exams even with submissions. All in all, if you design is accepted as a solution to something, be it from any institution, it would be accepted globally. What makes a good designer ? Well, I would not want to be diplomatic about it, but its subjective and it depends. Designers alter existing designs. Designers design a completely new Product/Service/System. Designers are everywhere. Be it in managerial jobs or just typing out a letter. A design can be a solution or can just be a part of daily life that people can't notice, but its still there, making their environment livable. A designer has to be a good observer besides being able to judge. There is a slight difference in Art and Design- its the process involved. Design is design if their is a process of thought, testing, and self critiquing is involved in it. Conveying this I do not mean that Artist don't think. But for them the process is completely different, and its not necessary that the product is functional and/or is a solution.
