Career advice: What are the pros and cons of a career in finance vs one in marketing?

• Some context: I spent 4+ years preparing for a career in finance since college, but after some twists and turns in my career path, I find myself in marketing right now. I’m new to marketing, and I find it more interesting than finance. However, (correct me if I’m wrong), I feel that finance is more “technical” and thus more “lay-off friendly.” Anyone here have similar experiences switching from one to another?

• Answer:

  First, don't feel like you have to go back to finance because it was your original plan. Careers are not linear. Life takes us in twists and turns, which makes it more fun.   The path to success goes through places and experiences we did not foresee. I would say most successful people end up practicing a career that is quite different than whatever was their original plan when they signed up for college.   I don't think you can say finance is more technical -m there are aspects of marketing that are very technical. You are probably correct in that it is more layoff friendly: it is a more stable job. Marketing is more dynamic, but I see that as a good thing. You may get laid off or right-sized in marketing but if you are good you should also be able to find another job faster.   Keep in mind Marketing has evolved to be a collection of competencies, it is not a career.
