What is a good free internet web blocker?

How will google, Facebook and other web companies generate revenue if majority of the internet-population started using an Ad-blocker plugin in their browser?

  • As we know that the above mentioned companies generate maximum of their revenues by using AD's on their sites. What if most people start installing Ad Blocker plugin in whichever browser they are using. Will it affect the revenues of such internet giants to a great extent??

    Ad-blockers can be circumvented using various techniques. The fact that most websites don't do it is to avoid forcing users to see ads when the user has obviously made a choice to rather not view them. Most Ad-blockers allow an option to show non-invasive / text based ads, and many users opt to see those ads.  If majority internet population starts using the plug in and blocks all ads, the model will shift to pay per use or companies will not mark advertisement banners with any specific keywords and start putting them at random places thus increasing inconvenience for everyone. The consumption of ads is also now shifting towards mobile devices where it is more difficult to block ads and the ads are better placed as well - thus reducing the resistance. Finally, as Edwin has pointed out below, the revenue models are now shifting towards 'social' advertisements as the click through rates for display ads are abysmally low.
