What's better: Android OS or Blackberry OS?

Is it a good idea for RIM to ditch blackberry OS and adopt Android?

  • Since a lot of developers have stopped developing for Blackberry OS, why not adopt Android but continue to offer the features that consumers love about Blackberry (their enterprise features, BBM etc.)?

    It's a good discussion for argument. Arguably - what people love about their Blackberries is the hardware - specifically the keyboard - followed by enterprise-level Email capabilities and BBM. Blackberry OS as a platform is dying a slow death. Compared to other eco-systems there is relatively little application development and no market enthusiasm. A modified version of Android might help to revitalize Blackberry's dying brand. Android's extensibility and ability to be modified creates the perfect environment. RIM could continue its successes with solid hardware / keyboards, and port over its proprietary Apps. A Blackberry interface could be introduced on-top of Android (like Samsung's Touchwiz or HTC's Sense) to differentiate its strengths in the market. On top of that, Blackberry will enjoy the benefits of the Android ecosystem, with its existing library of Apps and consumer interest.

No, that would not be a good idea, if that were to happen, RIM would become just another Android manufacturer among the hundreds (thousands?) out there. It would have no unique selling point, RIM would fade into mediocrity (even more so than it is now). If it were to adopt WP7/8 on the other hand, it would still have enough uniqueness to stand (nearly) alone, and offering its services on top of that may work. The next year will be difficult for RIM and I wouldn't put any money on them surviving (other than a sell-off).
