Though Bangalore is a wonderful city, why are the roads so bad?
-
This status quo pretty much applies to all the major roads in Bangalore. I was appalled to know that the Government hasn't taken even the smallest measure to set things right in Suranjan Das Road. There are facilities of utmost importance in this road(BEML, HAL, DRDO etc). I really want to know the reason why things aren't improving here. http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/bangalore/its-status-quo-on-suranjandas-road/article4925089.ece

Answer:
Lots of roads, drains, sewers, sidewalks in (Bangalore/bengaluru) are paved then repaved, dug up and filled and then dug up again. This isn't an answer but more questions. Who is responsible for handing out the contracts and making sure its done properly and in a timely fashion? Why aren't investigative reporters using the RTI and tools to un-earth and expose these corrupt officials/contractors? Why are local residents not more proactive about their self interests? We live in these neighborhoods Walk through them everyday, benifit from good infrastructure and if these things are in done the neighborhood is more in demand and property prices would also appreciate more. Why are we not following the money trail? Why do we not demand accountability from people to do their jobs?

Primarily they are bad because 1) Lack of co-ordination They are bad because of a lack of co-ordination between different agencies. In my experience living in bangalore the roads were dug up for some purpose (laying cables, some maintenance work) and they were NEVER fixed. BBMP is responsible for maintaining roads. However, I found BSNL (even Airtel), Water Supply and Sewage boards digging up roads and temporarily fixing them when they are finished. 2) The root of all evil, Corruption I had read somewhere that BBMP does not insist contractors to lay a maintenance layer of asphalt which can easily increase the life of the road by a good 2 years. Why they don't do it? Your guess is as good as mine. 3) We aren't outraged enough We have learned to live with it. We aren't outraged enough. It is ridiculous to compare the amount of road tax the BBMP has the audacity to charge and the conditions of the road. Thats the end of my rant
