How Do I Become a Music Business Executive?

  • What I mean is I want to become an executive who looks over the workings inside a record label or any similar music company(such as radio station or TV channel like MTV,VH1 or a recording studio) What I exactly intend to do is looking over the career of a music artist(including searching, discovering and promoting artists). Listening to new songs, understanding the working of a complete music process such as a complete studio album being recorded from the beginning to end and then its proper promotion. As I understand I somehow want to become an A & R Exec/record producer. All I want to know is what am I supposed to be doing(educationally as well as professionally) to make it in some music company or start one. If you suggest any  courses please do mention the universities offering them. Thanks :-)

    There's no text book answer to how you can become a record executive, and CEO, etc.. Knowledge and education in the field you are interested in will definitely help tremendously and should be applied in most cases but the biggest win will come from opportunity, timing, knowing, relationships, networking, friendship, and maybe a little bit of luck. Most very successful record executives and CEO's have never seen college and for some, not even high school. Sometimes there are no boundaries when it comes to pursuing your dream. You have to want it, breath it, live it, but most importantly, never ever give up no matter what.

Contemporary music schools offer educational advice too but I think if you get hired somewhere where ever you are and research how to progress the task assigned you'll do good. Don't think that the Berkeley Grad is a know it all with out street cred.
