Is WhatsApp (What + App) more of a generic brand name (e.g. diapers.com, soap.com, tripadvisor.com) or distinctive (e.g. quora.com, expedia.com, zillow.com) or a combination of both?

WhatsApp sounds like a generic name but catchy as well. It has some emotion tied to it [i.e What's up dude?] which coveys the message. Do you think that a generic brand name increases user adoption compared to a distinctive name given that the product is rock solid? I don't care about the SEO advantage that generic names bring to the table but i am more interested in the value that is perceived by the user. I have built a kickass product & own generic as well as distinctive domain name. Which naming approach would you prefer & why?
