How long does Google retain the automatically saved drafts on Gmail after the email has been sent?

When composing a new email, Gmail saves your draft, after every pause after every change, and assigns a unique URL to each of them. How long does Google retain these drafts in its servers after the email has been sent? Also: what is the purpose of saving these drafts, as they are not readily available to users?

Answer:
My best guess is that it has to do with the fact that everything on Google's servers is redundant, multiple times. I think this is the reason why they're saved for a while.
