What is a good entry job for a marketing degree?

Career Advice: What are the most attainable entry-level roles for recent college graduates in today's job market?

  • Since graduating American University in May 2012 I have not been able to secure a solid entry-level job. My interests have shifted to marketing, advertising, and branding strategy, which is where I've focused my networking. However jobs in the industry seem to require certain skills I have not yet acquired. For instance, I have not been able to foresee an entry level job in the branding space that doesn't require prior experience and graphic and web design proficiency, at the least. Thus, I have refocused my energy towards positions that hire capable college grads based on that alone. However, it's also been difficult to discern the job titles and specific roles I ought to be customizing my self-pitch for. Does anyone have any advice for us college graduates who have an idea of the field they want to get into but not the specific positions, across all fields, that are hiring most rapidly simply based on competencies that more often than not come with a Bachelor's degree?

  • Answer:

First of all, job hunting sucks.  A lot depends on you, but I've found that it helps me to find jobs when I'm a little angry and cynical.  Anger and cynicism helps me get out of bed in the morning.  When I work on my resume, I think to myself, this is BS, but that gets me going.  I think about doing the pitch as putting on the show.  Yes, I'm angry.  Yes I hate this BS interview and the BS questions, but I'm able to put on the smile, come up with a nice act, and make the audience feel good.  It's not what you know, but who you know.  Network with your friends and alumni, and be extraordinarily grateful to anyone that offers you a job.  Also, beggars can't be choosers.  I've never started with thinking about the field that I've wanted to get in.  I've just gone and done whatever looked like it will get me a paycheck.  If it comes with money, and it's not illegal or unethical, I'll do it.

If you have not obtained any intern jobs then you can try to create them for yourself. Have you located any relevant volunteer opportunities to build your skills and connections? Find a local community group, a local band or small business and offer to help with a marketing campaign. If experience is what you need you may have to create the opportunities yourself.  You may seek to obtain a job that is in an organization or company but not in a marketing or branding role. Are you open to a job in customer relations, sales, office support, front line work (for example outreach in a not-for-profit) depending on the industry you may look at supporting roles that get you in the door. How have you displayed your abilities? Have you marketed yourself well? If you understand your target industries and general roles you should be able to create a broad enough marketing campaign for the industry. Do not rely on applying for jobs, convince the customer that you are the product they need to solve a problem. There are many online activities you can also get involved in, find a place where people who hire are playing and join in, LinkedIn or Twitter are probably better than Quora :-) Best of luck

It's been close to a year since you've graduated now... Have you been interning or volunteering in a related way for that period to build experience that will make you continually more qualified for the roles you want?
