How can I stop eating so much sugar?
-
I have a really bad habit of eating sugar. Sometimes I feel guilty after I eat sugary foods. It's a love/hate relationship. I want to avoid diabetes and live a healthy life, so how do I stop?

Answer:
There are several alternatives to eating refined sugar which are available in the US markets and I assume in most developed metropolitan area. A lot depends on why you are avoiding it. Some of the suggestions may not be appropriate for diabetics, but if that is the problem you should be asking your doctor not Quora. In no particular order, 1.Honey ( do not feed honey to infants under 2 years for immune system reasons) 2.Pure maple syrup 3.Agave syrup 4.Stevia- a plant based sweetener. Truvia is stevia with some filler.(I use this almost exclusively these days. ) There are other stevia brands with filler out there . Sweet Leaf is a good one 5. Artificial sweeteners like Splenda, Equal, saccharine 6. Corn syrup- the kind you buy in grocery stores is not the high fructose corn syrup Some of these can be substituted in cooking preparations and some cannot. Refined sugar has qualities that I have not bee able to replace with other sweeteners for some baking uses- meringues in particular require sugar, but other baked goods can use honey as a substitute. There will be a change in texture. Most good general cookbooks such as Joy of Cooking should have an equivalence chart. The better western cookery vegetarian cookbooks do. Try Deborah Madison' books or the Moosewood Cookbooks. Some foods have naturally high levels of sweetness and can be used to help a sugar craving. Roast beets and cooked carrots are good

That thig is hard for me too. Try to keep a strict "diet" (without sweeties). How often do you eat?If you eat daily, for first 2 weeks try : eat sweetyes one day and one day not. After those 2 weeks, try to go for this : eat sweetyes one day and 2 days not.And keep to go for this untill you won't eat sugar.I recommend to have a chat meal a week or at 10 days,so this will reset your metabolism.Eat 2 pieces of cake a week :)

It depends on our eating habit and behaviour. They are part of our life and never expect to change them in one day. Start with small change in your food habit. For example: Instead of 2 spoons of sugar, reduce to 1 spoon. Avoid shopping food with high sugar content. We are less tempted if it is out of reach than when we see it in our fridger. Then, start replacing sugary food with healthier one like fruits and dairy products. I usually replace sugar with honey, though high sucrose content, it has benefits over sugar. Other than maintaining discipline in food habits, it is equally important to practice physical exercise to keep oneself healthy.

Like any habit, you have to make a conscious and continuous decision. You've taken the first step. Next is avoidance. To help simply don't buy anything that has sugar in it. That means when you grocery shop no soda, candy, ice cream, cakes, cookies, etc. Just tell yourself, they are available if and when I want them. Used stevia for your basic sweetening needs. I prefer Kal Stevia. It's pure 100% unadulterated stevia. Very affordable and great taste unlike other stevia.

You can try some other food you like which is healthier than sugar. When you want to eat sugar, then go eat something else to replace the sugar. I saw many people drinking water when they wanted to smoke. You'd better make up your mind to fight against the sugar.I know that's hard, but that is what you want, isn't it?

Eat more healthy fats like coconut oil, palm oil, tallow from grass-fed cows, nuts, good quality butter. Eat raw fermented vegetables; best if you make it yourself. Be sure to eat quality protein everyday but not too much.

Human are born with a preference for sweet foods. And sugar has played a vital role in our survival at times when food has been scarce. Literally sugar cravings are a mental phenomenon based on the pleasure we get when we eat sugar. But in our sugar-coated world our preference for sweet foods has led to excessive consumption. Just pay attention to all those be easily ignored and hidden in the name of sugar:Sucrose,Glucose,Maltose,Lactose,FructoseMolasses,Hydrolysed starch,Agave nectar,Corn syrup,Rice malt syrup,Honey,Golden syrup.
