How can I bring Wikipedia article abuse to the notice of moderators?
-
My friend painstakingly collected common last-names of our caste (loosely equated with tribe/clan ) and put it as a Wikipedia topic. Someone has been deleting this article with reason given asĀ "this is ridiculous: unsourced gibberish - we've got to begin to get a handle on these dreadful Brahmin articles" For an outsider (read non-indian people), the list of last-names might sound ridiculous but in India, such a thing is very useful. In fact in my own community referred this Topic extensively to look up if Mr. X is indeed of our caste. I am sure the article might be violating some Wikipedia guidelines and there might be a good scope for improvement. We are willing to work harder and improve the quality, provide more evidence etc. But currently we think we are being subjected to random trolling by people who appear to have some bias against the caste. **What is a good way to deal with these kind of cases ?**

Answer:
From your description, it appears that it violates a number of Wikipedia policies, especially https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:No_original_research. Your friend ought to publish the list that he or she collected in a https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Identifying_reliable_sources like an appropriate conference or a newspaper and then it can be cited in Wikipedia in support of the article. If you still think there is a case for the article as such, you can raise the issue at the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Administrators%27_noticeboard.

Create it as a series, not just as a standalone. I would recommend creating a "List of common last names of Kshatriyas | Vaishyas | Shudras" as well. Having citations would be useful, of course. If the Wikipedia community eventually votes down such a series (rather than quick-deleting), which is what it sounds like is happening now, consider starting Indian Caste Wikia. Some great examples of how Wikias can go into detail that wouldn't be appropriate on Wikipedia: http://muppet.wikia.com/wiki/Muppet_Wiki, http://proteins.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page and http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Portal:Main. Good luck!
