Is private Job better then Government Job?

Which is better for a final year engineering student in India:  a government job or the one I have already been offered by TCS?

  • Original question: I  am a final year engineering student already placed in TCS. My parents  say me to apply for government job but I prefer private job more because  it gives you an opportunity to see the world and also more salary more  promotions. Which is better and why? I prefer private job over government because you have more opportunities and more options available for your career. Also you can switch your job.

  • Answer:

I think perhaps your parents feel the government job is "safer".  You feel that you are willing to accept the higher risk of a private job because the rewards are greater. To put their minds at ease, you must present arguments that this private job is not such a big risk as they imagine.  Or is it a prestige thing?  Find out what they are worried about and try to soothe them.  But do what you think is best.  You are grown up now and they will have to learn to accept that. There is nothing wrong with listening to advice from your parents.  They have many experiences that you do not.  However, it is also possible that they are not aware of the realities of jobs in the engineering sector.  So you must take advice from as many sources as you can get -- but you are the only one who can make the final decision.

Go for Govt. job, no regrets, however, it depends on your interest as well. Should there be a situation, I'd choose govt. job, depending on the position or job profile, though the pay may be less initially, on the long run, would be beneficial. All the best!!
